Payson JHS secretary arrested for alleged sexual relationship with minor

A secretary at Payson Jr. High School has been arrested for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a minor.

Police say Montreia Lynn Barney, 49, was arrested on May 5 by the Utah County Sexual Crimes Task Force.

According to a probable cause statement, Barney engaged in a sexual relationship with a former student who was 16 at the time. At the time of the relationship, Barney was a finance secretary at Mount Nebo Jr. High School. 

Police say the minor's brother caught the two in an LDS church parking lot engaging in sexual behavior. 

She was charged with unlawful sexual conduct with a 16- or 17-year-old. She posted bail and was released after being booked into jail.

Provo School District announces new superintendent

This is a news release from the Provo School District.

The Provo School District Board of Education voted Keith C. Rittel as its next superintendent Wednesday.

Rittel currently serves as Deputy Superintendent of Clover Park School District in Lakewood (near Tacoma), Washington, a school district with a similarly-sized student population as the Provo School District. Effective July 1, 2012, Rittel will succeed interim superintendent Robert Gentry and former superintendent Randall Merrill, who retired in January of this year.

"It's a great honor to have been chosen to lead Provo's schools," said Rittel. "The community and its resources are ideal for developing students. Parent support is excellent. I share the District's vision for the future, and exceptional and diverse programs are in place. I look forward to getting to know the people in the community and working to develop a long-term relationship with the fine educators and staff in the schools."

Utah’s public universities raising tuition rates again

Despite increased funding from the Utah State Legislature, students at Utah’s public universities will be paying higher tuition next year.

The State Board of Regents held a meeting on Friday and approved tuition increases for Utah’s public universities. According to a news release from the Utah Dept. of Higher Education, the average increase in tuition is 5.6 percent for 15 credit hours, which is the lowest increase in more than a decade.

Although the Utah State Legislature increased the higher education budget for the first time since 2008, Bill Sederburg, Commissioner of Higher Education, said that tuition has to be raised to meet the demand of enrollment growth.

PROVO — Timpview High School’s football coach Louis Wong was suspended for what the school calls questionable expenditures.

Wong is on unpaid suspension while the Provo School District reviews his program’s financial records.

Wong has lead the Thunderbirds to four state championships since 2005, but now the school claims he had questionable expenditures, including uniforms, meals and car repairs.

Wong has the right to appeal the suspension within 15 days. If not, he'll be fired in 30 days.

SALT LAKE CITY – Governor Gary R. Herbert has appointed Chyleen A. Arbon, an adjunct professor at Brigham Young University's Romney Institute of Public Management, to serve on the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole.

Provo redrawing district boundaries

The Provo Municipal Council is redrawing its district boundaries and those of the Provo School Board.

The council will determine the new districts in March, before the elections of four of seven school board members.

They have taken public comment and have not yet made a decision on new redistricting maps.
