Ground broken on LDS Provo City Center Temple

PROVO – Nearly a year and a half after the Provo Tabernacle burned in a fire, residents are one step closer to having a second LDS temple in the city.

The Tabernacle was an icon in downtown Provo for more than a century before being destroyed by a fire in Dec. 2010. Its fate remained unknown for almost a year until Thomas S. Monson, President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, announced during LDS General Conference that the Tabernacle will serve a new purpose: Provo’s second LDS Temple.

A groundbreaking was held Saturday morning, and thousands gathered to celebrate the planned renewal of a city and church icon.

“We’re grateful the brethren made the inspired decision to build this temple out of the ashes of this beloved tabernacle that we loved,” said Elder Jeffery R. Holland.

Payson JHS secretary arrested for alleged sexual relationship with minor

A secretary at Payson Jr. High School has been arrested for allegedly having a sexual relationship with a minor.

Police say Montreia Lynn Barney, 49, was arrested on May 5 by the Utah County Sexual Crimes Task Force.

According to a probable cause statement, Barney engaged in a sexual relationship with a former student who was 16 at the time. At the time of the relationship, Barney was a finance secretary at Mount Nebo Jr. High School.

Police say the minor's brother caught the two in an LDS church parking lot engaging in sexual behavior.

She was charged with unlawful sexual conduct with a 16- or 17-year-old. She posted bail and was released after being booked into jail.

Officer fired, accused of inappropriate conduct

Provo High School students are speaking out a day after a School Resource Officer was fired for alleged inappropriate conduct.

Officer Cody Harris was dismissed from the Provo Police Department Thursday after an internal investigation. A press release from Provo PD indicates Harris “used extremely poor judgment” during a May 2 birthday party at the school.

Students had planned to protest at the police department Friday afternoon, but the protest was not held.  They said they have at least 200 student’s signatures on a petition to try to get Harris back on the payroll.

“I think it’s wrong that he got fired ‘cuz it was a joke” said Kameron Hamilton, a Provo High student.  “I support him.  I’m there for him ‘cuz it was a joke and I think it’s wrong.”
