Provo City Center Temple groundbreaking set for Saturday

The City Center Temple in Provo will hold a groundbreaking on Saturday.

Earlier this month, the Provo Municipal Council unanimously voted to surplus half an acre of 100 South between University Avenue and the west end of the Provo Tabernacle. The LDS church expressed interest in purchasing additional slices of the street once the city is ready to sell.

The Provo City Center Temple will be the second in the city.

Provo Mayor John Curtis is getting a head start on his 2013 re-election campaign by raising money through a political action committee.

Curtis' first fundraiser will be a backyard barbeque on May 12. Prices start at $250 and go up to $5,000.

Curtis says the money raised will fund multiple campaigns for Provo candidates.

American Piano Duo to perform free concert April 28

DUI checkpoint west of Elberta on Friday night

The Utah County Sheriff's Office will be conducting a DUI checkpoint on Friday night because of the Easter holiday.

The checkpoint will be located on milepost 147 of SR-6, just west of Elberta, and will begin at around 1 p.m. Friday and end by 3 a.m. Saturday.

The checkpoint may be a slight inconvenience for motorists, but the Sheriff's Office asks that citizens be patient to help ensure the safety of the roadways.

"Drivers suspected of impairment will be given roadside standardized field sobriety tests to determine impairment levels and confirmed impaired drivers will be arrested. Drivers not identified as impaired will be allowed to proceed with minimal delay," they said in a news release.

Holi festival in Spanish Fork this weekend

The Holi Festival of Colors is this weekend in Spanish Fork.

The festival honors the deity Krishna. Every spring, he and his followers would grind up flower petals and throw them on each other.

The festival takes place on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple (311 West 8500 South, Spanish Fork).

Colors will be thrown every two hours. Admission and color packets are $2 each.
